The inaugural season for the Minnesota Valkyrie of the LFL is nearing.
Valkyrie quarterback Jana Skrtic was kind enough to answer a few questions for Minnesota Sports Zone.
Nam Huynh: Thanks for taking your time to answer questions for us. We know you are working hard, preparing for the season. Before we ask you specific questions, tell us about yourself, your sports history and what brought you to the LFL, and more particularly, the Minnesota Valkyrie?
Jana Skrtic: I started playing sports at a young age. In high school I was all state in volleyball, basketball and softball. I played club volleyball for Florida State University, along with almost every intermural sport you could think of. As for the LFL I remember watching the first game and remembering how awesome it was. I was lucky enough to be living here in St. Paul when the team was announced. It was one of those “once in a lifetime” moments.
NH: Since the LFL is new to Minnesota, attractive girls in lingerie playing football is just about all of what most people really know about the league. What can fans expect to see at Valkyrie games?
JS: The biggest thing they can expect to see is football, real football. Great plays and hard hits. We spend hours a week working on technique, watching film ( LFL and college), and breaking down the actual game of football. This is new for all of us, so technique is pounded into our head everyday.
NH: You confirmed with Minnesota Sports Zone a while back that you are the starting quarterback. What’s it like being an LFL quarterback? What are the in’s and out’s of being a LFL quarterback?
JS: Being an LFL QB is fun and stressful all at the same time. I like being apart of every play and having the pressure on me, it’s when I do my best. Right now it’s a lot of learning. Learning the plays, learning to read defense, and learning my players. A big part of being an LFL QB is trust, I never realized how much trust there is in the game of football. It really is about being one unit, accomplishing one goal, bringing home that TROPHY.
NH: If you could compare yourself to any NFL player, past or present, who would it be and why?
JS: I would compare myself to Peyton Manning (twenty years ago!) I love the way he plays, he has patience that every play will workout, that his teammates will be exactly where he needs them, and you can always see how much they love playing with him.
NH: How often do you and your teammates practice? Like other football leagues, are things like scouting and watching video a part of your routine?
JS: We practice three times a week together; Mondays, Thursday’s and 5 hours on Saturday’s!! Also, everyday cardio and lifting schedules. We spend time together every week watching film, breaking down teams offense and defense. We all spend a lot of time watching film on our own also.
NH: This is a real question a reader from Minnesota Sports Zone was insistent on asking: What’s your phone number?
JS: Haha. Well my football number is 7. As for my phone number maybe they can have it if they make it to a game!!
NH: Again, thanks for taking time to answer these questions for us. Is there anything you would like to say to people in Minnesota who may be interested in following and watching the Valkyrie play this season?
JS: They are not going to want to miss this! Make sure to email kcindi_wilson@myminnesotavalkyrie.com or Joe_daniels@myminnesotavalkyrie.com for ticket sales. Also, check out our Facebook page for upcoming events and all Valkyrie information.
