The Minnesota Vikings are set to enter the season against quarterback Drew Brees and the Saints on Sept. 9 with only three healthy cornerbacks.
Reaction: CRAZY!!!!!
The Vikings have a special secret weapon up their sleeves – Husain Abdullah. There is strong indications that the Vikings are starting Abdullah at strong safety, according to Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins of the Star Tribune.
Safeties Tyrell Johnson and Jamarca Sanford said this week that they don’t expect to start. This leaves Abdullah as the candidate to start next to safety Madieu Williams.
Abdullah could see time as the nickel back as well.
“It’s a possibility,” defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said. “There are different combinations that we can use, and we’ve been exploring all those possibilities. We’ll just see how it all shakes out.”
If Abdullah moves in to play nickel back in situations that call for it, the Vikings would presumably move in Johnson or Sanford at safety.
According to Tim Yotter of Viking Update, cornerback Antoine Winfield said Abdullah might be the best cover safety on the roster and said safety Madieu Williams can cover as well.
Abdullah said he expects the fasting period to officially end Thursday night, according to Jeremy Fowler of the Pioneer Press. According to Fowler, Abdullah said he will eat “maybe a banana or something” because he doesn’t want to play on a full stomach.
