The Minnesota Vikings continued to address the receiver situation by acquiring receiver Greg Camarillo in a trade for cornerback Benny Sapp.
Camarillo, 28, has 105 catches for 1,165 yards and two touchdowns over the past two seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He is signed through 2011 with base salaries of $1.3 million this season and $1.7 million next.
This trade comes a day after reports came out that receiver Sidney Rice underwent a hip surgery that could knock him out for at least half the season.
The Stanford product is not considered a downfield threat, but more of a slot receiver. Acquiring Camarillo seems more a direct result of receiver Percy Harvin’s migraines, because Harvin is considered a slot receiver.
Regardless, the addition of Camarillo adds depth to a position that is in question.
Sapp, 29, received a $500,000 roster bonus on the two-year deal he signed in March and was due $1.4 million in base salary this season. He had been limited in camp due to dehydration and had fallen down the depth chart.
“Benny was a good player for us,” Vikings assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier said on Wednesday. “He did a great job while he was here. He helped us out down the stretch a year ago. Wish him the best with his new team, wish him the best.”
Update: Some words from Mike Wobschall of Vikings.com Blog regarding the trade.
Follow @mnsportszoneTime will tell exactly how the Vikings use him, but by all appearances he seems to be a prototypical possession receiver – versatile with great hands and a history of producing. He’s a nice addition for the Vikings.
