The Minnesota Twins acquired left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes from the Los Angeles Angels on Friday in exchange for a player to be named later.
The player to be named later must be revealed by Oct. 15.
Fuentes, 34, had been the closer for the Angels, with 23 saves this season and a league-leading 48 last year. Fuentes may get a few closing opportunities, but will likely see more time in the 8th inning.
“He’ll be setup and probably occasionally close if I use [Matt Capps] too much,” manager Ron Gardenhire said.
In 39 appearances for the Angels this season, Fuentes was 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA, allowing 28 hits and 18 walks in 38 1/3 innings, with 39 strikeouts. He held opponents to a .201 batting average, including holding lefties to a .132 average.
The Twins will make a 25-man roster move after Friday’s game to make room for Fuentes.
Update: To clear space on the 25-man roster, the Twins sent left-hander Glen Perkins to Triple-A Rochester after Friday night’s game with Seattle. Gardenhire said Perkins would work out of the bullpen in Rochester.
