Punto off DL; Will Return as a Backup
The Minnesota Twins are expected to option catcher Jose Morales to Triple-A Rochester and activate infielder Nick Punto from the disabled list before their next game on Tuesday against the Chicago Whitesox.
The team announced Punto will rejoin the active roster as a backup at shortstop, third base and second base. Third baseman Danny Valencia has excelled during Punto’s DL stint, unseating Punto as the the everyday starting third baseman.
Manager Ron Gardenhire said recently on his radio show that Punto and infielder Alexi Casilla will be used all over and rotate in the infield, allowing players to rest.
Meanwhile, shortstop J.J. Hardy is expected to return to the starting lineup on Tuesday as well.
