Childress: No clear backup behind Peterson; backups are 2 and 2A

Ever since losing running back Chester Taylor in free-agency, Minnesota Vikings fans have been wondering who the primary backup running back would be behind star running back Adrian Peterson.

Answer: There is not primary backup to “All Day” Peterson.

Running backs Albert Young and rookie Toby Gerhart has seen a lot of playing time during the preseason. Both players are considered favorites to essentially become Taylor’s replacement.

But the truth is, both players offer different skill sets and the Vikings may never have a true “primary backup” or “spell back.” At least for now, coach Brad Childress says there is no clear-cut No. 2 back, according to Mike Wobschall of Vikings.com Blog.

“I think it will be by week and who we are facing and what exactly we need out of a second running back,” Childress said after practice on Monday. “If you remember last year, there were a number of games where we didn’t have a third running back up and from time-to-time that will happen when maybe we need another tight end up or need another rush guy. So those guys are 2 and 2A.”

Young, 25, is more polished when it comes to pass blocking, but even so, his experience is limited while playing behind Peterson and Taylor. Young is also quicker on his feet and more elusive in both running and catching out of the backfield.

Gerhart, 23, is a power runner that can be punishing to the opposing defenses. Although he is not known much as a pass-catcher, Gerhart has shown ability to catch out of the backfield.

The Sanford product has value has a goal-line back, but Peterson is expected to get the bulk of those carries in those situations.  His experience in this offense is limited, so the Vikings may turn to Young early on in key situations.
