The Minnesota Vikings signed kicker Rhys Lloyd to a two-year deal this offseason to handle kickoffs.
Now his roster spot appears to be in jeopardy.
The plan was to have kicker Ryan Longwell handle field goals and for Lloyd to boom kicks through the end zone. Lloyd has underperformed so far as the kickoff specialist, at least compared to the standards Lloyd set for himself.
Lloyd apologized via Twitter after his performance on Saturday.
“I had a good warm-up just for some reason in the game I wasn’t hitting the ball very well and the expectations for me as a kicker, not necessarily from the team’s standpoint, but mine is a lot higher than the way I performed,” Lloyd said to the Star Tribune. “I obviously wasn’t happy after the game and felt I owed an apology whether I needed to or not.”
Judd Zulgad of the Star Tribune believes Lloyd should be safe Tuesday as the Vikings cut from 80 to 75 players.
Lloyd would certainly need to impress coaches on his kickoffs during the final preseason game to keep a final roster spot.
