The Minnesota Vikings announced receiver Jaymar Johnson has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a broken left thumb.
The third-year receiver/ punt returner got injured during the team’s exhibition opener at St. Louis last Saturday.
The Vikings placed Johnson on the injured list last week clearing a spot for quarterback Brett Favre on the roster shortly after it became clear the 40-year-old quarterback was coming back for another year.
Johnson, 26, was considered a favorite to win the fifth receiver spot on the roster. His injury opens the door for young players to step up, or for the Vikings to target a veteran receiver once team make roster cuts.
