Minnesota Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson is expected to return from the DL on Sunday, according to John Barone of MLB.com.
Hudson was on a 15-day DL for a right oblique strain and has not played since July 23. He took batting practice left-handed prior to Friday’s series opener against the Indians at Progressive Field.
“He was fine,” manager Ron Gardenhire said. ”He swung good left-handed and right-handed, so we’ll activate him Sunday.”
To make things a little complicated is infielder Alexi Casilla’s production at second base since filling in for Hudson during the DL stint. Casilla has done pretty well offensively, but certainly showed off his glove and range as well.
Hudson undoubtedly will resume his role as the starting second baseman, but Gardenhire can’t afford to leave Casilla on the bench for the rest of the season. Hudson rarely got a day off during the season, but I won’t be surprised if Casilla gets a start a couple times a week.
For days Casilla doesn’t start at second base, he had shown before his injury that he can play at short or even third base. At the very least a great late-inning replacement for on the base and on the field.
