According to multiple sources, the Minnesota Twins are considering trades to acquire a pitcher before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline.
So far the Twins showed interest but lost out on starting pitcher Cliff Lee. Despite one of the better bullpens in the American League, the Twins appear to be targeting bullpen help.
According to Tim Kurkjian of ESPN.com, the Twins have interest in Washington Nationals closer Matt Capps, although Kurkjian believes the deal is unlikely. The Twins appear to be targeting a “shut-down” closer to help or replace current closer Jon Rauch.
On Monday, multiple sources reported that the Twins had serious discussions with the Toronto Blue Jays to acquire a pitcher. No names were mentioned in these rumors, or any mentioning of whether they were targeting a starting or relief pitcher.
I find it somewhat surprising that they are considering adding bullpen pitchers when the Twins’ bullpen is one of the best pens in the league right now. The only thing I can think of is that they don’t feel confident with Rauch as the closer for the post season.
Moving pitcher Nick Blackburn out of the rotation was a good idea, but pitcher Kevin Slowey continues to struggle in the rotation. I would like to see the Twins add a top-of-the-rotation type pitcher to strengthen the starting rotation.
Pitchers Francisco Liriano and Carl Pavano look great, and Scott Baker and Brian Duensing look promising for the stretch. Adding a solid starter to the mix would give the Twins an opportunity to win many games in the second half of the season.
