When the Minnesota Timberwolves signed free-agent point guard Luke Ridnour this offseason it was assumed he would back up point guard Jonny Flynn.
That’s not the case.
According to Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press, team president David Kahn brought in the 29-year old Ridnour to challenge Flynn for the starting point guard spot.
“Luke is going to come in here with every intent of trying to win the starting point guard position,” Kahn said Wednesday when Ridnour signed a four-year, $16 million contract. ”That was very important to him and that’s the way we like it, too.”
Kahn likes Ridnour because he brings leadership and a veteran presence who will get plenty of playing time regardless of if he starts or not.
Update: Flynn will likely miss 3-4 months after hip surgery, which means Ridnour may start the season regardless. Who becomes the starter later on would be the big question.
