Mavericks Want Timberwolves to Take on Contracts in Deal For Jefferson

An hour ago we posted that the Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks are discussing a deal that involves power forward/center Al Jefferson.

According to David Aldridge of NBA.com, the Mavericks are not willing to offer up center Erick Dampier and his non-guaranteed $13 million contract straight up for Jefferson.  Aldridge reports the Mavericks want the Timberwolves to take on the contracts of shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson ($4.1 million next season) and shooting guard Matt Carroll (three years and $11.7 million remaining on his deal.)

The report says the Mavericks would rather hold onto Dampier’s valuable contract to use in other potential deals.

Thankfully, the Timberwolves have no interest in Stevenson and Carroll.

The teams appear to be negotiating still, but with what the Mavericks are currently offering, I hope the Timberwolves avoid this trade completely.  Dampier’s non-guaranteed contract alone should not be enough, and they shouldn’t need to take in players like Stevenson and Carroll.
