The Minnesota Vikings announced they agreed to a deal with free-agent running back Ryan Moats Tuesday.
Moats, 27, had his best season last year with the Houston Texans with an increased workload especially when Texans’ starter running back Steve Slaton went down with an injury late in the season. Moats averaged 3.9 yards on 101 carries with 4 rushing touchdowns in 2009.
This signing will reunite Moats with head coach Brad Childress who was then the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator when Moats was drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft.
Moats will presumably have an opportunity to back up running back Adrian Peterson with second-round pick running back Toby Gerhart already a strong candidate for that spot.
The Vikings also have running backs’ Albert Young, Ian Johnson and converted receiver Darius Reynaud on the roster.
Note:
Peterson plead guilty to driving 99 mph in a 55-mph zone. Peterson will keep his driver’s license but will be required to complete community service.
