The Minnesota Vikings are expected (if not already) to schedule a meeting with former Philadelphia Eagles’ running back Brian Westbrook, a source tells Minnesota Sports Zone.
The Vikings are shifting their attention to Westbrook now that running back Chester Taylor agreed to a four-year deal with the Chicago Bears. Taylor lead the league last season in catches in third-down situations, but Westbrook too is known to have great hands out of the backfield.
Westrook, 30, is the same age as Taylor but has had recent problems with concussions that limited him to only 61 carries for 274 yards last season for the Eagles. Westrook also has more “wear and tear” as a everyday back for several years as an Eagle. (Yes, he did split time with running back Correll Buckhalter and most recently with Eagles’ running back’s LeSean McCoy and Eldra Buckley)
Nonetheless, the team is certainly interested in bringing in Westbrook to reunite him with former Eagles’ offensive coordinator and Vikings’ current head coach Brad Childress.
Update: Recent reports say a “person with knowledge” believes Westbrook can only play for a team that plays and practices on grass. Our source says Westbrook still feels he is capable of being an everyday back with 20+ carries. This may prevent Westbrook from accepting lesser roles. (03/06/10)
