The Minnesota Twins are now left with a tough decision after finding out closer Joe Nathan has a torn UCL in his throwing elbow.
Kelly Thesier of MLB.com reports all pitchers in the Twins’ big league camp are in consideration for the closer role besides pitcher’s Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Carl Pavano and Kevin Slowey, who are locks for the rotation.
Thesier believes pitcher Francisco Liriano is a possibility to replace Nathan, especially after his impressive performance in the Dominican Winter League, as well as his performance in his second spring outing on Thursday night.
Liriano as a closer is intriguing because he has shown nasty stuff since his showing in the Dominican Winter League. His fastball looks to have better command and his changeup and slider look as good as its ever been.
The report said Liriano is still in the mix for the fifth spot in the rotation, but it also mentions that Liriano has the physical tools to become a quality closer.
Note: Nathan is still technically mulling over options of surgery or possibly attempting to rehab and play this season. The odds are in favor of Nathan opting for surgery, but the final decision isn’t expected for at least another week.
