Minnesota Twins’ catcher Joe Mauer’s eight-year $184 million contract extension covers the 2011-18 seasons.
Mauer will make $12.5 million this year in the final season of a $33 million, four-year deal and will earn $23 million in each of the following eight seasons under the extension. None of the money is deferred.
The contract also carries a full no-trade clause.
He gets $100,000 for MVP awards, $25,000 for All-Star and Gold Glove awards.
Because Mauer is earning a flat $23 million a year the value of his contract, per year, actually goes down in value. Considering inflation and the expected growth in salaries eight years from now, by the end of his contract, the $23 million could look more like $17-18 million in present-day value.
With all that said, Mauer got an awesome contract. $184 million is hardly a “hometown discount,” but Mauer somewhat did a favor to the Twins by accepting the money at a flat-rate, rather than the typical growing annual salary.
