Minnesota Twins’ GM Bill Smith told the Pioneer Press that he is comfortable with the in-house options for third base.
Joe Christensen (Star Tribune) said via Twitter that he got hints that free-agent third baseman Joe Crede won’t be back, even with another incentive-laden deal.
The Twins signed infielder Brendan Harris this offseason to a two-year incentive-laden deal. If Harris becomes the everyday starting third baseman, achievable triggers will significantly bump his salary for the second year of his contract.
Christensen’s report goes against what we’ve been reporting all along; that the Twins would look into signing Crede to a similar incentive-laden deal. We still believe the Twins will watch Crede heading into Spring Training, especially if his price becomes right.
Update: John Bonnes (Twins Geek) said via Twiter that Ron Gardenhire said on KSTP they like Crede, but they’re waiting and cautious to see how his back is.
