Mark Craig (Star Tribune) first reported that Minnesota Vikings’ left tackle Bryant McKinnie was kicked off the NFC Pro Bowl roster for missing practices on Friday and Saturday.
McKinnie has since defended himself by saying that he has been battling ongoing injuries late in the season and was pushing himself to play. McKinnie did acknowledge that he did go out and party instead of preparing for the Pro Bowl game, but he ultimately decided that taking time off was the right decision.
“Had to withdraw from the Pro Bowl,” McKinnie said via Twitter. “I’ve been playing through pain the last month and need time to let my body heal.”
He said he contacted his agent and trainer last night in regards to his injuries and him playing.
“I was trying to push myself to play in this game and I thought my body would start feeling better the later we got in the week,” Mckinnie said. “So yesterday I called my agent and said I don’t think I will be able to play. He called and got in touch with the trainer, the trainer called me last night and I told him what was bothering me.”
Update: NFL Network reports McKinnie will lose his Pro Bowl game check ($22,500 for players on losing team, $45,000 for winning team). (01/30/10)
