Winfield To Have Limited Role?

Judd Zulgad (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Vikings could be planning on playing cornerback Antoine Winfield in a limited role on defense.

Although nobody on the Vikings’ organization has gone out and said he will be limited in his playing time, comments from Winfield and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier suggests his role may change for this week and possibly into the playoffs.  Winfield has struggled in the past couple games, and Frazier said Winfield is not nearly 100 percent because of a right foot injury and the staff is considering adjustments to help him.

When asked by the Star Tribune about playing in a limited basis, Winfield said: “Would it make any sense? It depends on who you are asking that question.  To me? No question, I want to be out there.  This is really big game for us, we need to win this game.  But I want to do whatever I’m asked to do.  If they want me to go out there and be the starter, I’m going to start. Play nickel or sit out.  I’ll do that, too. But I’m a competitor.  I definitely want to be on the field Sunday.”

We will find out Sunday on what type of role we will see Winfield.  We don’t expect him to sit out next week, but we expect him to have more safety help and less blitzes that put him in single-coverage.
