Michael Russo (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Wild’s hockey equipment was destroyed Friday afternoon when the back of the Ottawa Senators’ visiting team equipment truck caught fire in Kanata, Ontario.
Although it’s just equipment, many of the Wild’s players have custom-fitted gear to protect certain areas of their bodies. Some of the equipment is to protect prior injuries, but to some, the equipment just has to feel right.
“There’s lots of superstitions with gear,” winger Martin Havlat said to the Star Tribune. “You have to feel right. Some of the guys take a month, three weeks, two weeks to break in new skates. Every guy’s different. It’s going to be interesting what’s going to happen.”
Nobody was injured and all games are scheduled to play on time.
Update: Goalie Anton Khudobin is on his way to Ottawa in case goalies’ Niklas Backstrom and Josh Harding say they can’t start with new equipment.
Nick Schultz reportedly had his skates picked up from house that he uses for pond hockey and went to Play It Again Sports to buy shoulder pads.
