Free-agent third baseman Mark DeRosa, who has been linked as a possible free-agent target for the Minnesota Twins has agreed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants.
DeRosa will reportedly earn $12 million in the two seasons in San Francisco. The Giants view him as a third baseman, but will use him all over the field.
In the meantime, the Twins have been mulling over re-signing third baseman Joe Crede to a similar deal as the one he signed last year. The Twins are likely to wait until late in free-agency, because they want to make sure Crede is healthy and that they have explored all reasonable options.
One of the reasonable options include trading for San Diego Padres’ Kevin Kouzmanoff, but talks have simmered down and we had reported that the Padres’ are now leaning towards hanging onto him. At first, the the Padres liked the idea of acquiring players to plug in holes in their lineup, but have since decided that Kouzmanoff is affordable enough to hold onto and can easily be traded down the road.
A source close to the situation said the Twins will continue to watch the market, but unless Kouzmanoff becomes available for the price the Twins like (the price of pitcher Glen Perkins), the Twins are content on re-signing Crede.
