Charley Walters (Pioneer Press) reports the Minnesota Twins have started contract talks with catcher Joe Mauer and his agent.
Walters said Mauer could cost as much as $25 million a season, but Twins’ top executive under the Pohlad family ownership, Jerry Bell is confident the team will have good negotiations with Mauer.
“I’m past the point where I get nervous about these things,” Bell said to the Pioneer Press. “It’ll get worked out. They usually do. We usually are able to work something out with players who we really want to keep.”
Update: Joe Christensen (Star Tribune) said the Twins would not confirm the Pioneer Press report that said the Twins and Mauer had begun negotiating. According to Mauer himself, they have not started yet.
“I’ve been thinking about things like that, but to tell you the truth, we haven’t really started [negotiating with the Twins],” Mauer said to the Star Tribune late Wednesday in a phone interview.
