Redmond Out; Morales In

Minnesota Twins’ backup catcher Mike Redmond is set to become a free-agent this winter.  Redmond is turning 39 years old this summer, and all signs are pointing to the Twins letting him go.

The team has a viable replacement option in catcher Jose Morales.  Morales, 26, appeared in more games than Redmond did this season, despite spending time at both AAA Rochester and with the Twins.  Morales appeared in 54 regular season games in limited stints, while Redmond appeared in only 45 while on the major league roster the whole season.

Here are the stats comparisons of Morales and Redmond for 2009.

Batting Average On Base % Runs Walks RBI
Morales .311 .381 14 14 7
Redmond .237 .299 9 11 7

To me it’s a no brainer.  Redmond did some good things for the Twins and did a fine job filling in for catcher Joe Mauer when he went down with injuries throughout his career.  But Redmond appears to have finally significantly slowed down, and it would make no sense to keep Morales waiting from locking his spot on the big-league roster.

Turning 39 this summer, I don’t think Redmond would sign anywhere else.  Maybe the Florida Marlins?  I certainly don’t see Redmond accepting a minor league roster spot, as well.
