Hicks Fined $5,000; Williams Fined $7,500

Sean Jensen (Pioneer Press) reports Minnesota Vikings’ offensive lineman Artis Hicks was fined $5,000 by the NFL for what was explained as a cheap shot on St. Louis Rams’ defensive tackle Gary Gibson on a play in the third quarter of last week’s game.

Hicks started in place for offensive tackle Phil Loadholt, who was scratched from the lineup because of an ankle injury.

In the third quarter, Hicks was pass blocking when quarterback Brett Favre completed a 47-yard pass to  receiver Sidney Rice.  After Favre released the ball, Gibson turned to run down the field, and that was when Hicks pushed Gibson.

Gibson landed awkwardly and is now done for the season with a broken ankle.

Hicks said he planned to appeal the fine.

Update: Turns out another Viking was fined in the Rams’ game.  Defensive tackle Kevin Williams was fined $7,500 for a hit on Rams’ quarterback Kyle Boller in the third quarter on Sunday.
