The NFL trade deadline is less than six days away, but the recent release of practice squad quarterback John David Booty by the Minnesota Vikings could mean the team is not interested in trading quarterback’s Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels.
Booty is essentially a perfect third-string quarterback, because he is young and he is cheap. Dropping him from the practice squad and exposing him to all of the teams in the league will likely prevent him from rejoining the Vikings again (at least this season).
The former USC quarterback is definitely good enough to catch on to another team’s practice squad. The Vikings were lucky enough to bring him back to their practice squad when they made their final 53-man roster in the first place.
To be realistic, the team wasn’t likely to trade Jackson or Rosenfels anyway since in-season trades are very rare in the NFL. The release of Booty could just be a sign that the team is just that confident in quarterback Brett Favre, but regardless of the reasoning, the move likely assures the team is content at their quarterback situation.
Update: Officially and on the record from coach Brad Childress, one of the reasons why they dropped Booty was because they needed offensive line help in practice.
