John Shipley (Pioneer Press) reports Minnesota Twins’ third baseman Joe Crede will be shut down for the season, according to Twins’ manager Ron Gardenhire. Crede has been bothered by a variety of injures, but his recent back injury tops them all.
Despite reports that Crede may call it a career and retire, all indications are that Crede will continue to try to play. His current injury history will likely much lower his contract value, meaning the Twins are likely to give it at least a little thought.
The Twins and the San Francisco Giants appeared to be the only teams interested in Crede’s services this past off season, so if the Twins are interested, it is likely the Twins would be able to re-sign him to an even lower-risk contract. With that said, his injury history and age definitely lowers his ceiling and reward value.
If Crede were to return to the Twins next year, he will play on a friendlier grass field, since field turf (what the metrodome uses) has been regarded as an non-ideal playing surface.
