Top Dominican Prospect Signs With Minnesota

Melissa Segura (SI.com) reports the Minnesota Twins agreed to terms with Dominican Republic prospect shortstop Miguel Sano.  Sano, 16, is regarded as the best Dominican prospect, and is a hot commodity around the league.

According to the report, Sano agreed to a $3.15 million signing bonus.

The Twins have been regarded as one of the final suitors for Sano, who many scouts even believe is the top unsigned international prospect in baseball.  Although Sano is a shortstop prospect, the Twins project him as a third baseman, because he has size (6-3, 190 pounds) and hits for power.

Sano did not sign right away with a team in July, when Latin American prospects who are 16 years old by Aug. 31 of that year are eligible to sign.  The reason was because there was concern over his age, but MLB officials reportedly already cleared and confirmed his age.

Update:  Here are the interesting details leading up to the signing of Sano.  Looks like the Pirates almost had them, but issues between the team and Sano’s agent lead to the agreement with the Twins.
