Minnesota Timberwolves’ guard Antonio Daniels was acquired from New Orleans earlier this month mainly because the team were able to gain more cap space for next summer by trading forward Darius Songaila. As we posted earlier, the team would not mind keeping Daniels on the roster, but he would be part of the rebuilding process and would have to accept a reserve role with the team.
Apparently, he wants no part of this rebuilding process. Per league sources, Daniels, 34, wants to play on a team that will give him more minutes, so he can earn himself another sizable contract in free-agency after the season.
Playing in Minnesota is not going to give him the type of minutes he would like, because guard’s Jonny Flynn and Ramon Sessions are expected to get the bulk of the playing time at point guard.
Timberwolves’ president David Kahn is likely allowing Daniels and his agent to find a trade as long as the Wolves can get a similar expiring contract in return, much like what they have told center Mark Blount. Daniels though, is expected to at least participate in training camp, whereas Blount will be staying home until a resolution can be made about his contract.
Update: Looks like our sources were correct; Daniels will not be joining the team, and the Timberwolves are seeking to trade him. If the team does not find a trade that takes in another expiring contract in return, the team and Daniels appear to have a buyout already agreed upon.
So obviously…. Daniels will not be participating in camp after all.
