Vikings Practicing The Wildcat

Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Vikings spent time working on their version of the wildcat offense.  This marks the first time since mini camp that they showed the wildcat offense.

Per the reporters, the Vikings ran through a installation period that featured no defenders.  Running back Chester Taylor and receiver Percy Harvin took direct-snaps under center with quarterback Sage Rosenfels split wide (injured quarterback Tarvaris Jackson did not take part as he is being eased back into practice).

The team is clearly not secretive about their plans for using this hybrid offense.  Apparently they practiced the formation while cameras were still allowed to film the action.

This is clearly a dimension of an offense, Vikings fans have not seen before — especially in coach Brad Childress’s “kick-ass offense”.  It is quite possible that we will see more of this as camp goes on, and through preseason.

As the Miami Dolphins showed last year, although the defenses know the wildcat is there, the formation brings so many possibilities and options that running the play doesn’t necessarily expose the team.  The Dolphins were successful week-after-week, running the play all over defenses.
