Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek is currently playing in the minors, hitting .278 in a combined 10 games between rookie-ball and AA New Britain. Grudzielanek was signed last month in hopes of joining the Minnesota Twins sometime this year, if Twin’s second basemen continue to struggle both offensively and defensively.
It seems likely that we will see him this year.
We believe Grudzielanek is poised for at least a September call-up, but his promotion could be accelerated if an injury occurs within the infield. One DL candidate could be third baseman Joe Crede, whose health is questionable, while having shoulder issues all of last month. Infielder’s Brendan Harris and Nick Punto have recently been spending time at third.
At 39, Grudzielanek appears to have some gas left in his tank. He managed to hit .299 in 86 games last year for the Kansas City Royals. Injury concerns and young prospects kept him from being re-signed with the club after last season.
