Twins Sign Lefty Mahay

The Minnesota Twins have signed relief pitcher Ron Mahay, who was released by the Kansas City Royals this week. The 38-year-old lefthander was 1-1 with a 4.79 ERA in 41 games for the Royals.

The Twins optioned pitcher Armando Gabino to AAA Rochester to make room for Mahay on the Twins’ roster.  Gabino appeared in one start for the Twins, but the outing lasted only 2 2/3 innings, as he gave up four earned runs.

To make room for Mahay on the 40-man roster, the Twins designated pitcher R.A. Dickey for assignment.  The Twins now have 10 days to either trade Dickey or pass him through waivers.

Mahay will give the Twins a second lefthander in their bullpen. Pitcher Jose Mijares is currently the only southpaw since the club recently moved pitcher Brian Duensing into the rotation.

In Mahay’s 13-year career, he is 25-11 with a 3.89 ERA. The Twins would be Mahay’s eighth major-league club.
