Joe Christensen (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Twins sent Midwest scouting supervisor Mike Ruth to Indianapolis to meet with top-pick pitcher Kyle Gibson and his family, Sunday. Ruth presented Gibson with a latest offer, but there were indications the sides remained more than $1 million apart.
The Twins will continue to negotiate with Gibson.
Gibson and his representation are reportedly asking for $2.5 million, whereas the Twins are standing firm at around $1.287 million — the MLB-recommended for the 22nd pick.
Christensen also says that Gibson would return for his senior season if there is no agreement. If the Twins don’t sign him before today’s 11 pm deadline, they lose his rights — and Gibson would re-enter the draft in 2010.
Christensen also reports that the Twins are leaning toward replacing pitcher’s Anthony Swarzak with Brian Duensing for Thursday’s start at Texas.
