Twins Are Interested In Penny

Joe Christensen (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Twins are among the teams interested in Red Sox’s pitcher Brad Penny and would consider claiming him off release waivers.  The Red Sox are waiving Penny to make room for newly acquired pitcher Billy Wagner.

Penny would cost the Twins between $1.11 million and about $1.44 million for the rest of the season, depending on how many innings he pitches.

The Twins are in good position because although they are still in the playoff hunt, they have a worse record than most of the playoff contenders in the AL.

There is speculation Penny will clear release waivers and land with a National League club.  The Colorado Rockies and Florida Marlins are reportedly interested as well.

Penny is 7-8 with a 5.61 ERA.
