Jay Glazer (FoxSports.com) is ‘positively convinced’ that quarterback Brett Favre could indeed join the Minnesota Vikings for this season. He reports that during his visit to Mankato, everyone within the Vikings’ organization talked about Favre joining not as an “if” but rather a “when”.
“I’m telling you it’s already done,” said one Viking. “Right after the Indy game (first preseason game). I don’t think anyone here doesn’t think that.”
Another Viking said, “I don’t know if it’s done, but I think he’ll be in by the third preseason game.”
If it happens, when is a good question. While the one source says he thinks it will happen this week, I don’t. If it happens, getting him in by the third preseason game would have been ideal, but waiting until the season starts to see if the Vikings starting quarterback falters could be another route. That way Favre can come riding in on his white horse.
Basically, Glazer says the coaching staff will evaluate quarterback’s Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson through the preseason (even through the start of the regular season), and if the Vikings are not confident their quarterbacks can get it done, Favre comes in to save the team.
Glazer could be right, because the Vikings have not legitimately given their quarterbacks a shot yet. The Vikings would essentially be giving Rosenfels and Jackson a try-out through preseason. If one quarterback amazes the coaches and seals their fate with consistency and great game management, we won’t see the 39-year-old quarterback.
Heck — Maybe Vikings’ coach Brad Childress and Favre have a deal together. Maybe the two agreed to let the current quarterbacks play in preseason, and if they aren’t good enough, Favre will come and play. Childress did promise a competition between the two — but maybe the two don’t know its a competition for Favre’s position.
Sean Jenson (Pioneer Press) thinks that we all should take Glazer’s report seriously, because he is well sourced within the team, having a strong relationship with several top officials and players.
Peter King (SI.com) almost mirrors Glazer’s report, stating that should the Vikings struggle at quarterback, they will call Brett Favre. “It’s a pretty strong feeling, based on knowing the people involved and based on the desperation of the Vikings to do more than win a division this year.”
Mike Florio (ProFootballTalk) has picked up on Glazer’s story as well.
Meanwhile, Vikings’ receivers Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice say they don’t have information on Favre (according to their twitter accounts). Berrian said, “OKAY ppl I DON’T KNOW bout Brett!! FINAL ANSWER!!” and Rice said, “I’m not sure what’s goin on with the Favre situation, all I kno is The Vikes are in training camp! Not interested n speculation.”
