According to a report from Yahoo.com, via Don Seeholzer (Pioneer Press), Minnesota Timberwolves’ head coach candidate Kurt Rambis is starting to assemble his coaching staff. Per the report, Rambis is anticipating a formal offer later today.
We broke the news that Rambis would be selected as the head coach four days ago, and reported even earlier that Rambis was a very serious candidate (thanks to Mark Madsen). Our position has not changed, we expect an announcement to be made soon, and even as early as today.
According to the report, Rambis is expected to hire longtime assistant and former Boston Celtics assistant general manager Dave Wohl as his top assistant and could keep one of the Wolves’ current assistants, Ed Pinckney or Dean Cooper on staff.
The only issue seems to be the salary and the contract length being offered to Rambis. Rambis had turned down the Sacramento Kings’ head coach job because he was not offered enough salary and financial security. He was reportedly offered only a two-year deal from the Kings.
In the meantime, Charley Walters (Pioneer Press) expects the Wolves to sign Rambis to a four-year deal worth $8 million, based on Rambis’ experience, the current coaching market in the NBA and the time it will take the Wolves to rebuild.
Edit: Pioneer Press staff says the Timberwolves are negotiating with Rambis. The “sources” say the Timberwolves hope to get a deal done by Monday or Tuesday.
