Jackson Denies Wanting To Be Traded

During a media interview on the field before practice today, Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback Tarvaris Jackson denied the rumor that Jackson wanted to be traded if the Vikings were to sign quarterback Brett Favre.  This rumor came about just before camp, when it seemed inevitable that Favre would eventually sign with the Vikings.

“I heard about it.  I never said that.  I never said anything like that at all”, Jackson said.

Regardless of whether he truly wants to be traded or not, he simply doesn’t have a choice.  Most teams already have a starter (or at least a legitimate battle for it) as well as a back-up pretty much ready for the season, as training camp is nearing it’s end.  In the end, Jackson’s better off winning the backup spot behind Favre, especially with Favre’s health and age a concern.

At 26, it’s hard to believe the Vikings have given up on Jackson.

The Vikings do plan on waiving or trading  a quarterback a some point, as most NFL teams do not carry more than three quarterbacks on their final 53-man roster (some teams carry two).  If the Vikings waive quarterback John David Booty, it’s almost a certainty that a team will pick him up.  Booty is a better third-string quarterback than a lot of the other third-string quarterbacks in the league.

Quarterback Sage Rosenfels has a pretty large contract that will dictate his spot on the roster, whether or not he wins the primary back up role to Favre or not.  No team would be willing to pick up his contract, and the Vikings surely would not eat up his salary in a release.  I could see Rosenfels being a commodity for teams that are in need for a immediate starter following some type of injury to their own quarterback.
