The Minnesota Timberwolves traded recently acquired center Etan Thomas and a couple of their 2010 second-round picks to the Oklahoma City Thunder for veteran guards Chucky Atkins and Damien Wilkins. The Timberwolves still have two remaining second-round picks for 2010.
Thomas, 31, was originally acquired in the pre-draft trade that sent guards Randy Foye and Mike Miller to Washington.
Team President David Kahn released a statement about the move:
Pioneer Press: “We’re committed toward rebuilding our roster with an eye toward flexibility and long-term success, and this move better positions us for the summer,” Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn said in a statement. “I want to thank Etan for his professionalism and understanding and wish him all the best moving forward.”
Atkins, 34, could be a much-needed mentor to young point guards Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn. The only other point guard on the roster (besides the rookies) is second-year point guard Bobby Brown.
Wilkins, 29, provides depth at the shooting guard position. Veteran shooting guard Quentin Richardson is already rumored to be traded elsewhere.
