Sid Hartman (Star Tribune) reports the Minnesota Twins are not close to any trade. This latest bit confirms an earlier report by Charley Walters (Pioneer Press), three days ago.
General Manager Bill Smith does not want to “give up too much in the future for some immediate benefit.” He uses outfielder Denard Span as his prime example. Smith explains he could have traded Span while he was in AA and in AAA for a quick fix, but it turns out that Span became a mighty fine player for the Twins.
According to Hartman, the trade talk involving third baseman Freddy Sanchez and the Twins are not likely to happen because the Pirates are asking for too much. Rumors are that the Twins could get Sanchez for pitcher Francisco Liriano, but it isn’t likely that the Twins will give up the left hander.
The only move before the trade-deadline could be the signing of 39-year-old second baseman Mark Grudzielanek.
