Kahn To Visit Spain Next Week

Minnesota Timberwolves President David Kahn is expected to meet with DKV Joventut in Spain next week, to discuss the contract of point guard Ricky Rubio.  Rubio has two years remaining in his contract with DKV Joventut and has a reported $6.7 million buyout clause.

Kahn confirmed his plans to travel to Spain in a text message to The Associated Press on Thursday, but declined further comment. It was first reported by YahooSports.com.

Upon arrival, Kahn is expected to meet with the Spanish team in hopes of lowering the buyout to an amount reasonable for Rubio.  The NBA collective bargaining agreement only allows the Timberwolves to pay $500,000, so they rest would come out of Rubio’s pocket.

With salaries under $100,000 while playing for DKV Joventut, Rubio will need to significantly lower the current buyout number.  The point guard will have to use his rookie base salary ($2.7243 million for first year), along with the $500,000 the Wolves are allowed to pay.

The Timberwolves cannot set up the 5th round pick with lucrative endorsements, but he shouldn’t have a problem getting them himself.  He is already featured in a commercial for Gillette, and it can be assumed he has deals with other companies as well.  He certainly is the talk of the NBA right now.
