Crede To Return Next Year Is Doubtful?

David Shama (Minnesota Sports Headliners) suggests it is not likely for the Minnesota Twins to re-sign third baseman Joe Crede for next season.  Although Shama admits the Twins filled a hole at third base this season, a “frugal” Twins club is likely to look at internal prospects who are doing well in the minors.

Shama mentions two third baseman prospects as candidates for the job next season.

“Danny Valencia, 24, was recently promoted from double AA New Britain to AAA Rochester.  He’s batting .380 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 79 at bats.  He seems like one of the franchises’ top 10 prospects.

Luke Hughes, another 24 year old, was signed as a free agent out of Australia.  He’s playing third base at New Britain after being at Rochester earlier in the year.  At New Britain last season he hit 15 home runs in only 70 games and has a reputation for power.”

The article also mentions shortstop Brendan Harris and third baseman Brian Buscher as protection at third base.  Before the signing of Crede, the Twins were ready to enter the season with the two in a platoon role at third base.  Harris is now the starting shortstop this season, and Buscher is riding the bench with a few sprinkles of playing time.

In our opinion, if Crede can make it through a full season, the Twins should seriously consider re-signing him.  He is only 31 this year, and will be able to play in a back-friendlier grass field.  Valencia and/or Hughes can try to prove themselves even more in AAA ball, or even play a reserve role for the Twins.

At the very least, they will be able to fully groom their next third baseman.  If Crede amazes us all and plays as good as his All-Star season and stay healthy, we have trade bait.  If we feel Valencia and/or Hughes are too valuable, we could always move them to different positions.  Both players have some experience in different positions.
