The Minnesota Twins recalled second baseman Alexi Casilla and sent back infielder Matt Tolbert to AAA Rochester. The move was officially announced following the series finale with the Chicago White Sox (13 to 7 win).
Casilla has been hitting very well, batting .340 at Rochester. Although Casilla is getting back on track offensively, coaches made it aware the second baseman isn’t completely focused defensively.
Manager Ron Gardenhire plans to insert Casilla back at second base and at the top of the line-up behind Denard Span and in front of Joe Mauer to create some more speed at the top of the line-up. Gardenhire plans on giving the offense a different look by using the bunt more often, and advancing runners before Mauer and Justin Morneau come up to bat.
Note: The team also plans on using a 12-man pitching staff following the All-Star break rather than the current 11-man pitching staff. The Twins plan to activate Kevin Slowey from the disabled list and send Anthony Swarzak into the bullpen.
